10/2/13 - New Bedford,MA and Newport, RI

We are so much smarter today than we were yesterday morning! We had a "two-fer" when it comes to really excellent, interesting and educational museums.

After leaving the Cape Cod area, we wandered down the coast.  Our first stop was New Bedford, MA, and the Whaling Museum.  If only every museum we've visited had done such a compelling job of presenting their subject matter. There were exhibits containing historic whaling equipment, logs, sketches from 18th century whalers, and so much more.  There was a 1/2 sized replica of a whaling boat. And there were several skeletons of various types of whales, one of which was still oozing oil into a flask!  I guess they do this for years....

We then went over some REALLY tall bridges over Narragansett Bay to reach Newport, Rhode Island. The original objective was just to cruise Ocean Drive to see the massive estates. But then we found out that Newport is home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame was an impressive place. And, of course, with Jack being a former tennis player, and Stacy's father being such a tennis nut, it was great to visit all our old "friends" like McEnroe, Connors, Nastase, and Jack's idol as a player (and man), Arthur Ashe.  There are lawn tennis courts one can rent... for only $110 per hour. But in our ongoing effort to squeeze the most mileage from every dollar, we chose not to do that.

Some evidently well-to-do ladies playing on some really expensive grass. (They were NOT good players.)
After Newport, we meandered further down the coast and ended up in Mystic, Connecticut....
