Mystic, Pizza and more!

Today we explored Mystic, Connecticut, a beautiful little seaport town made famous by the 1988 movie Mystic Pizza that launched the careers of Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and Vincent D'Onofrio. It was also the setting for the 2003 Oscar winner Mystic River. It really is a beautiful little town. We didn't eat at Mystic Pizza, but here's a picture for anyone who might be interested:

The legendary Mystic Pizza!
The town itself is an active seaport located on an estuary. Here are a few pics:

We then drove to an old lighthouse, looking across the inlet at Rhode Island.

So now the bummer. We went to New London, CT, home of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base and the USS Nautilus Museum. We were totally stoked for a tour of the Nautilus, the first nuclear powered sub! But, guess what? It is a U.S. National Park which was... you guessed it... closed because of the wonderful government shutdown.

From here, we are heading to one of the absolute highlights of this entire trip -- our nation's capital, Washington DC. Hmmm... I wonder if those Tea Party A**holes will get a conscience (and a brain) before we arrive???
