Sylvan Beach, New York

We spent yesterday meandering around the Finger Lakes area of New York. We actually were trying to find ANYPLACE that had a WiFi connection so Jack could send something to his favorite client. But the little towns like Ovid, Lodi, Romulus, and Trumansburg were not "hot spots", so we finally paid $2 to get connected at a truck stop.

The day's wanderings were through beautiful wine country, and we serendipitously stopped at a wonderful restaurant for lunch where they made their own bread, grew their own produce, ground their own meat (what's a nice way to say that?).  Jack had a lamb burger that he's still talking about at breakfast the next day! First class food, with a lovely glass of cold white wine. One of many wonderful "easter eggs" that we've encountered along the way.

This morning we woke up in Blossvale, NY, near Sylvan Beach. It is a gorgeous campground, built around a river bend, and near the Eastern end of Oneida Lake. The camping world starts to close up a bit after Labor Day in this part of the world, and we are one of very few folks here. As we travel east and north, we are having to call ahead to make sure the campgrounds are still open. Many of them close mid-October, but some close as early as mid-September.

Not a lot of photos to share today. But we did take a side trip up to Rochester, NY, home of Genessee Beer. This brewery was shut down during prohibition, started up again making industrial alcohol during the war, and is now back and thriving.
The "Feds" closed 'em down!
Rochester has a beautiful water fall right in the middle of town, which is why it was founded as a mill town. These falls powered the grinding stones of the flour mills.

Here is a map of where our travels have taken us so far...."A long and winding road...." This computes out to 5,000+ miles, but we have 8,600 miles on our odometer, which gives you some idea of the side trips we've been taking.
